On 15 March 44 B.C Julius Caesar was killed in the Theatre of Pompey in Rome. His assassination was led by his close friend and fellow Senator Marcus Junius Brutus. In 43 B.C Caesar’s murderers were declared enemies of the Roman State. Brutus relocated to Crete in 42 B.C. Following military defeat that same year at the hands of Marcus Antonius,and fearing his capture, Brutus committed suicide. According to Plutarch, Brutus’s final lament was that ‘By all means must we fly; not with our feet, however, but with our hands’.

24 November 1963. Outside of Police Headquarters in Dallas Texas Lee Harvey Oswald, the man arrested on suspicion of assassinating President John F. Kennedy was shot by Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner. When questioned over the motives behind the killing Ruby simply stated that he had been distressed following the untimely demise of the 35th President.

On 22 November 1963, President John F. Kennedy was killed by sniper fire whilst travelling in a motorcade along Dealey Plaza in Dallas Texas. Occupying the same open top limousine as the president was his wife Jackie and the Governer of Texas, John Connally. In the immediate wake of the shooting Governer Connally heard the President’s wife repeatedly remark ‘They have killed my husband, I have his brains in my hand’.

In January 1998 a political sex-scandal emerged involving the then American president Bill Clinton and a 22 year old White House intern, Monica Lewinsky. Despite unambiguous DNA evidence obtained from Lewinsky’s clothing , Clinton fervently denied the allegations, famously stating on January 26 ‘I did not have sexual relations with that woman’. Having avoided impeachment, Clinton later admitted in August 1998 that he had an ‘improper physical relationship’ with Lewinsky which he himself deemed inappropriate.
